    Eighty-two percent of respondents reported using social media sites for medical research/support this year, up from 67% in 2015.

    In order to play a key role in their disease management, engaged patients seek to be as informed as possible when going to see their physicians. Ninety percent of respondents cited using at least one source of information to help understand their condition(s) and the treatment options available to them; typically, from an online outlet. In fact, respondents reported using an average of four sources of information.

    Beyond tracking the elements assessed in the inaugural Inspire Survey in 2015, we enhanced this year’s assessment with the addition of questions focusing on precision medicine and genetic testing, key areas that are growing across the healthcare landscape.  In this initial assessment, we found that just under 30% of respondents had heard of precision medicine; however, nearly 70% would be willing to share their DNA/genetic testing results and/or health records for clinical research.

    Highlights from this report:

      Over half of respondents reported going to their appointments with someone else on a regular basis and nearly two-thirds of those surveyed take prepared notes and/or questions with them.

      The preparation patients go through appears to be effective as most claim to initiate the discussion around new treatment options on a fairly frequent basis once inside the doctor’s office.

      In 2015, we found that only 28% of respondents use their phone for this purpose, this number skyrocketed to 50% in 2016.
